School Board Meeting
Goal: To become familiar with school governance
Outcome: Real-life application of school governance
To learn more about the policy making in public education, you are required to attend one local school board meeting.
Then you will type a summary of the meeting which includes the school district, the date/time of the meeting, and the major agenda items. Then you will reflect on the meeting by discussing any connections to class readings from your text book. You should also describe how you felt being there and any takeaways that helped to inform your thinking as a prospective educator.
Note to the Writer: Explanation of what to write about
I’m to write about my experience, at the meeting , some of the topics and any correlations to learned course content. Also I’m to include my overall feelings of being there, and how it made me feel. Did I understand what was going on? What questions did it leave with me, etc...
You do not have to list out all the agenda items, recognition, awards etc. You can summarize all these things into a paragraph but not talk about each one.
NOTE TO THE WRITER: HERE IS A BACKGROUND OF WHAT TOOK PLACE AT THE MEETING
The new superintendent of the county crafted a plan to cut special education programs across the county and relocate the remaining special education programs to other schools. The community, parents, and teachers have erupted with anger and mistrust about this change, so parents, teachers, and students came to the regular board of education meeting advocating/expressing how they feel about the change and removing students with disabilities out of their comfort zone and expressing how this move can impact them negatively. There were different speakers and they were each given 3 minutes to speak to their concerns to the superintended and board members.

Follow the rules of the publication manual of the American Psychological Association
(APA, 6th edition) in citing references.
http://www.apastyle.org/pubmanual.html , and through amazon.com. APA style must include a cover page, page numbers, running head, subtitles, citations and reference page.
Your writing should be in ‘People First’ language. People First language is used in professional fields to provide meaning and value to the student/person before the disability. Examples of People First language includes “student with Autism” as opposed to “Autistic child” or “child with a disability” as opposed to “disabled child.” Papers that do not reflect People First language will lose points.
