You may have been invited to join a graduate school and if not yet then you may be planning to post your application so as to be considered for an intake that will take place soon. Therefore, a graduate personal statement is a document that should be in your mind or you are already planning to write one. In many graduate schools it has always been a requirement that on top of the other documents such as letters of recommendation, test scores, and academic performance you are required to write a personal statement as a prospective student. A graduate personal statement is therefore an important document and in this paper we will look into important tips of writing a good graduate personal statement. The chances of securing an admission in a graduate school also depends very much on your personal statement. It is also evident that a big percentage of students don’t know how to compose a good personal statement.
A graduate personal statement is a letter or a document written by a prospective student to a graduate a school selection committee. In this letter the student shows his or her interest in joining the selected program. The student also shows the reason why the graduate school should consider him for the position. Due to the large number of applicants it has always been a problem for graduate school selection committee to chose suitable students. To a student, a personal statement is an important document because in writing of the statement the prospective student has a chance to convince the school selection committee that he or she is suitable to be in the school and also the program selected. On the other hand the work of selecting students from a large number of applicants by the selection committee is simplified.
To many students writing of a personal statement can sometimes be challenging. Writing of this statement is very different from the usual analytical writing students are used to in various courses they take in their studies. A good statement should show your ability to communicate and hence it should be free from any grammatical or spelling mistakes. In this statement your personal values needs to come out clearly and therefore you should include all your positive values that the school committee needs to know about you. You should also be honest and avoid any exaggeration. In the statement you need to put more emphasis on the values of your achievements rather than demonstrate how much of an achiever you are. Sometimes the admission committee will give out questions to guide students in writing the document and therefore the statement should fully address these questions by providing relevant answers. Finally, Like any other form of writing the statement should have a good structure, be interesting to read and be optimistic.
