Article on management
The race towards globalization is on, where the world is not turning back and this phenomenon is the current trend in all aspects of life, and business is not an exception. We are living in a world that is moving fast towards globalization, success of any business with a global scope therefore depend on how fast the business adopt the aspect of globalization. This issues form the basis from which Terence Power write his book International Business: a Canadian Perspective where from the observation, the arguments and claims in the book are valid.
There are various reasons why it is possible to agree with the author of this book basing on the validity of his arguments. To begin with, the author notes that Canadian businesses have to fulfill their obligations and responsibilities and for these reasons, these businesses have to spread their zones of operation beyond the domestic markets. This leaves these businesses with no any other options other than to explore the international markets. When these businesses acquire international markets, then their operation becomes global and this contributes to globalization.
Secondly, in his book Power focus on Canadian businesses but his claims, arguments and recommendations are valid on any business operating in any part of the globe. In particular, Power explores the importance of businesses to have a working strategy for them to survive in the competitive global market. A business with marketing and operation strategies that works will not only be a leader in the global market but also in the domestic market. In the book his arguments leads to the claim that success in businesses will mean success in globalization.
For managers to operate a business successfully, practical and theoretical skills are essential (Fenton and Natale, 1997). Power goes on to add that as much as operating a business is a reality the theoretical side also plays an important role. His arguments are hence valid since they have a theoretical and practical foundation. He that goes on to claim that managers and entrepreneurs prepared for the global market should take this as a challenge and operate their businesses strategically.
Management requires planning and strategizing with good awareness of the future because globalization is the future in the business world (Gardenswartz and Rowe, 1998). From this fact, the material is relevant to this course. Since globalization is the future in the business world then this course aims to produce a manager who will not only excel in the regional market but also in the global market and therefore this material becomes a good challenge.
For managers to succeed in their management duties then the theoretical aspect of management plays an important role. This book explores the application of management theories in the modern business and therefore looks on how to apply these theories in finding the solution to the real world management problems. A business that operates at an international level has an obligation to the society and therefore the issues of the environment become a concern. For managers to be successful in their duties then they must accomplish these roles and for this purpose, Power has dedicated chapter 17 of his book on ethics and social responsibilities for global businesses. The discussion in this chapter contributes a lot to the relevance of this book in the course.
Politics play a central role in determining the direction taken by business, international business therefore is under the control of international politics. The state is supposed to offer protection to international businesses however; it has a side in the market (Banerjee, 2008). For effectiveness in management, managers have to have a good understanding of the international politics. Chapter three of this book tackles this issue by giving a discussion on political business environment and this makes the book relevant in this course. The main reason why this book is relevant is that the course aims to produce managers for global business and market leaders. For managers of this caliber to play their role effectively they must have a good understanding of the global politics and its influence on global market. The managers also need to know and predict the future trends in global politics and their effects on business. A good example of this is the dominance of the US dollar as the main currency that results from political influence. The managers therefore need to be aware of a possible change to another currency and what this means to their businesses and markets.
The article in focus is about the governance of a global cooperation from an author's critical perspective. The article begins on business ethics and this part corresponds to chapter seventeen of the book. This chapter focuses on the ethical and social responsibility of a business that operates on an international scale. On the other hand, the article gives illustrations of some of the social responsibilities for a business. Finally, the article explores the role of power and politics in business particularly the international business. This corresponds to carper three of the material where in this chapter; Terence Power gives a deep analysis to the role played by politics in shaping the world's business and markets.
