Art & Architecture
Introduction
The painting waiting by Gardner is a display of a girl that is seated close to a certain woman. The girl looks tired, as she seems to have been waiting for something that has seemingly taken long to appear. Looking at the background of the picture, we realize that both the girl and the woman are sitting on a bench probably on a queue. The girl seems to be impatient, as she has dozed off. Even though the woman equally looks tired, she seems to be holding on hoping that her turn will come soon. The painting was done some years back and clearly displays an image of misery and despair. There are different ways in which the image has been displayed in the museum. Considering that, the image is a painting people are trying to figure out basing on the artistic styles that have been used to define what the writer implied. Art and architecture has gone through changes that have seen the adoption of unique methods to beautify their environment (Kleiner 15). The book, ‘gardener’s art through the ages’ takes us through the various phases that art has gone through. It clearly describes the different forms that art has taken since it came into existence. It also describes the different ways through which varying cultures look at art and how it is used to relate to the different events.
Waiting by Gardner
Art can be applied in almost all areas of our life, many people who actually practice and use art may not realize it until when the term is defined to them. Man himself is a product of an art piece considering the various forms and shapes that they take. Art is the texture, shape and the appearance that something takes. It has mostly been used to distinguish between cultures and describe the nature of an individual (Gardner 45). Despite the similarity in our make up, one man can easily be distinguished from the other by the values they preserve and cherish. Art therefore has to do with different communities, what they believe and practice. Art in the earlier days generally reflected the heritage of a certain community. Even today, art pieces are mainly preserved due to the cultural ties that are inclined to them. Countries and communities view Art differently. What is cherished as an art piece by a certain country may be quite different from how another nation looks at it.
People therefore came to realize how diverse art was when the different art piece from different countries and cultures were combined together. There are some cultures that view their dressing as an art piece considering the design and shape of their clothing and ornaments. In addition, others consider music as an art piece and therefore put emphasis on them. Others simply cherish certain buildings and consider them as their most cherished art pieces. All this can be related to the ancient times considering what the fore fathers cherished and preserved (Kleiner 4). Mostly when the term art is mentioned, people tend to focus on the past and look at what the fore fathers cherished. They generally look at how they dressed, the songs they sang, the foods they ate on how they were cooked and the morals that they cherished. Art has been seen as a substitute to culture as much as culture and art go hand in hand. Art is a wider topic that cannot be limited to the cultural practices of the people.
As the days go by and modernization is replacing civilization, people are inventing modern means to express art. There has been many migrations that has led to assimilation and absorption of different cultures. This has subsequently led to intermarriages that have left such generations wondering what they would adapt as their culture. This has therefore made them to combine the different models to come up with a very new one (Gardner 40). The blending of different artistic forms has taken a new level where you find that up to five different artistic cultures are being adopted to come up with a beautiful piece. Compared to the past whereby certain art pieces were limited to the communities where they originated, there has been a lot of liberty whereby people are free to adopt the cultural practices of other communities. It was quite easy to identify the cultural inclination of an individual by simply looking at how they dressed and talked.
The trend has however changed in the recent past where people choose to adopt what seems to be appealing to their eyes. Art has become an important subject that has drawn a lot of interest among the people. Though it is a rich subject, it was underutilized because people lacked knowledge on how to blend the different pieces to come up with an appealing piece (Kleiner 8). This is the reason why the topic has been taken as a major subject that is being tough in schools and other institutions of higher learning. The topic has been broken down into other topics such as interior and exterior designing, fashion and the likes. Art has become irresistible as people aspire to make the environment that surrounds them to be more appealing and attractive. This has given rise to the professional importance of knowing how to blend different designs to come up with an appealing look.
The desire for involving professionals in the matters to do with art came up considering the fact that some people longed to have an artistic look around them but they did not know how to do it. Not everybody will have the time to blend colors and texture to come up with a desired look. It takes a critical study of the colors and realizing what each color means to an individual. There is a general perspective that is held concerning colors that are used in the painting, which makes their use to be of necessity (Kleiner 9). Colors are used to describe different moments and events but all this differ in different communities and cultures. Textures are also used to bring out a certain kind of atmosphere that generally affects the moods of the people. What professional designers do is find out what an individual desires to express or feel and then come up with colors and textures that will suit the description. This has also been translated into buildings whereby professional architectures are hired to come up with designs that would suit a person’s description.
Art and architectural designs were being done casually by our ancestors and thus not bringing out the desired texture. People never realized how the textures and colors they used affected their moods and their general well being. But studies that were accompanied by observations revealed that color and texture tell a lot about a person and generally describe their character and nature (Kleiner 9). That it is why it has become important and necessary for people to seek professional counsel whenever they organize for a special occasion. Planning for a house involves a wide variety of designers and architectures that have to come up with workable ideas. These professionals have the ability of converting individuals oral ideas into a building that will make them feel comfortable. This has however brought controversies whereby the designs that have been realized have not actually satisfied the person. People have therefore to be careful when selecting designers for their pieces.
As the days go by, art is becoming more complex and thus expensive; people are having varying tests that are making their designs to be more expensive. The issue of art is no longer a personal issue, governments and states are inventing artistic appearance of the buildings in specific towns and places. Cities and towns are being designed in certain shapes in order to serve certain purpose. All this is however being done for certain kind of aesthetic recognition (Gardner 54). There is uniqueness that people are looking for in buildings and towns. Nobody wants to be like anybody else and are therefore using art to come up with such a unique appearance that will distinguish themselves from others. This is drawing us back to the past when artistic designs were being used to identify who a person is. The only difference here is that things are being done in a more sophisticated and complex way.
Conclusion
From this analysis, we come to realize that art has gone through various developments that have made the topic even more interesting. Art revolves around identity and interests that is making many people to adapt it. Many aspects that were considered to be of the past are currently adopted and implemented in the modern designs (Kleiner 14). Modernization has improved the essentials of art by giving it a more professional touch. The subject has been held with higher esteem considering the impact and perception that it has on the performer and the observer.
