Introduction

 

According to Kandampully (2001), hospitality management is a subject that deals with the issues that relate to the hospitality industry. This area directly deals with the welfare of the human beings and therefore needs to be managed affectively. Despite the many other activities that people are involved in, they usually require sometime where they can concentrate on themselves with the aim of rejuvenating their bodies. Human psychology is an essential aspect that determines their general productivity. It is usually advisable that man sets some time apart to refill their bodies so that they can be more productive. Hospitality therefore relates to leisure activities, food, health and travel. These are needs whose satisfaction is determined by a person’s income.


 

In this study, we are mainly going to focus on fast food restaurants. Fast foods restaurants have become a common business unit due to the physical needs that they urgently provide to their clients. There has been a lot of preference for the fast foods because of their lesser price and the instant energy that they provide to the people, (Burnett, 2006). Eating in hotels has been considered a waste of time and money considering the process that is used to organize and bring food to the table. The world is moving at a faster rate and so are people becoming even busier. Eating which used to be done in an hour has been reduced to only a few minutes due to the various engagements that people have. It is mainly because of this reason that people prefer to eat in fast foods restaurant rather than go to hotels.


 

Fast foods restaurants deal in foods that are not only easy to prepare but their prices are also slightly lower in hotels, despite the discouragements by several health organization to rely on fast foods, the trend has been had to stop. People are always looking for eating places that will be economical to their pockets and their time (Clarke, 2007). Fast foods are mainly composed of deep fried foods, juices, salads and fruits. Even though they are balanced, they do not provide the necessary nutrients that are necessary for the body. The foods are also very addictive and thus making it hard to stop, the restaurants continue to enjoy good profits as many more people are being drawn to such seemingly delicious foods. Fast foods come in different forms and packages and that are made affordable to everyone. Compared to hotels that can only accommodate people that have a certain amount of money, fast food restaurants can accommodate people of different economic status.


 

Fast food restaurants gain their popularity from the need of people that are mostly working. Most people usually work in towns, which are slightly away from their home locations. It may therefore not be easy for them to go back during lunch breaks to eat from their home. Reid (2006) found that, fast foods restaurant have provided a good alternative to such people who may not need to spend a lot of time and money going back to their home to eat. Most employees are given less time as lunch break and may therefore not be able to go back to their homes to eat. Fast food restaurants have also provided avenues for people who cannot always meet to socialize. In such a busy economy, people utilize every opportunity to meet with their friends over lunch breaks or any other time of the day when they are free. Restaurants have therefore not only been avenues for eating but also meeting to discuss several matters. Family members or friends who are not able to meet at any other place can always gather in restaurants simply to see each other amidst their busy schedules. This has therefore promoted social interactions, and family gatherings and reunions (Crompton, 1997).


 

Fast food restaurants may not have to do with social status or economical background of the people. They are designed to fit all categories of people. With the increasing number of such restaurants, there has been a lot of competition among such chains. Wood (2008), states that, the management is therefore supposed to come up with strategies that will ensure that customers are always attracted their way. One of the issues that such managements need to keep in mind is the social aspect of the restaurants. People do visit restaurants mostly not because they want to satisfy their physical hungers but also their social needs. They therefore prefer to be served in a relaxed environment that will make them to focus on themselves. The design of the restaurant will determine whether it will attract more clients or not. A restaurant is supposed to take care of the needs of the diversity of people. There are those that mainly look for a place to relax, and those that want to meet their friends and family members. Being sensitive to such needs will enable the management to come up with an appropriate design.


 

Since the main purpose of a fast food restaurant is to provide its clients with finger licking delicacies, they need to ensure that the foods are prepared and served in a hygienic environment. Restaurants may receive quite a number of guests that the management may not expect. This is because; people who visit restaurants do not need to book earlier appointments with the management. The management is therefore supposed to be prepared to meet any number of guests by ensuring that their store is well stocked (Pizam, 2005). It may be disappointing for clients to visit a restaurant only to be told that there order cannot be met. They may not be in a position to understand the number of guest that have been received by the restaurant and thus leading to inadequate stock. The management also needs to ensure that the workers are well equipped to handle the varying needs of the clients.


 

Conclusion

 

From the discussion, we realize that fast food restaurants are important social areas that provide affordable avenues for people to break off from their busy schedules. They will remain to be profitable to the management only if certain management issues are taken into consideration. There are similar business units that are competing to receive similar attention from clients. Several improvements also need to be made to the restaurant due to the changing needs of the people. Due to the raising health issues that fast food restaurants are bringing forth, the management should consider preparing foods that will not have diverse effects on people’s health. Health measures need to be taken to ensure what is being served to the people is of good quality (Portes, 2009).
