Directions:
Pick ONE of the following two question prompts to respond to. You must utilize
theories and specific examples from the readings to construct and support your
arguments.
1. Fertility: The readings suggest several different reasons for the decline in
fertility rates in the US. While some think women and families are waiting out the
economy to have children, others think women are choosing to shift when they have
children to later in life as more and more women pursue education and careers.
Either way, the argument is that women have the same total number of children, just
later in life. Call this the "children deferred" argument. Others think that women
are choosing to have fewer children overall, regardless of the age they have
children, because of shifts in attitudes towards child rearing and increased
societal acceptance of birth control and abortion. Call this the "children
foregone" argument. Do you think women are having children later in life (children
deferred), or do you think that women are choosing to have fewer children (children
foregone), or both? Summarize the main points in the readings and build on them
with your opinion to this question.
2. Mortality: The risk of dying has steadily shifted to older and older ages,
increasing the life expectancy within the United States. Do you think that life
expectancy can increase forever with improvements in medicine, nutrition, and
exercise science? Or is there a limit to human longevity? Be sure to summarize the
main points from the readings and build on them with your opinions to these
questions.
Guidelines/Directions:
Content
Remember, your paper must demonstrate your knowledge of the readings, use specific
examples from as many relevant readings possible
Include a strong and clear thesis statement in the introduction, notifying the
reader of your main arguments
Draw from course materials and assignments to build and support your arguments
Use specific examples, dates, figures, etc. to strengthen your points (for example:
"In the United States, life expectancy increased from 'xx' years to 'xx' years for
men between the years 1900 and 2000.")
Remember to make connections between changes in numbers with historical events and
social institutions (i.e. medical advancements from WWII, the invention and
widespread use of vaccines, etc.)
Your political views and anecdotes should supplement your arguments; but they should
not construct your main arguments
Do not copy and paste text from prior discussion board posts
Always proof read!
