THEORY PAPER
Introduction
A theory can be defined as statements and principles designed to define a group of facts and forces which have been repeatedly tested and universally accepted as capable of being applied to define and predict natural forces. On visiting an urban central business district to fetch a friend to go out with for a movie, he is held at his workplace trying to fix up things in the office before he leaves. I decide to wait for him at an adjacent public park with public seats and well-maintained grass. The park is small and on both sides, there are roads, footpaths and a building.
Across the park there are paths used by those who choose to take a rest at that point. People walk all through, some getting in while others moving out, others lie on the grass as others rest on pavement concretes facing the roads while others make use of the public seats provided around the park. Other people were seen dozing off where they lie while others busy moving fingers over their phones and tablets, others moving their heads as to the tone with wires hanging on their ears, possibly listening to music.
There are movements all over, within and around the place, vehicles, people, and heavy machinery. The loudest noise of the heavy engines, the vrooms and hooting of vehicles, people talking in low and high tones, walking past and knocking each other along the paths.The flowers along the paths and around the whole area exhibiting some sense of beauty, the birds flying above evidently taking attention of others who daze at them.
People would give way for others passing, others could greet while others were conversing and expressing themselves in different ways. People changing seats, others rise to proceed their ways as others take up the spaces left. The place have a sense of comfort and discomfort with the cool shades of the trees and the wind blowing giving sense of ease while the noise from vehicles and people giving a sense of distraction.
Theory
There are different theories that can be used to describe a public space and the events occurring there. Symbolic interactionism is one of the theories, and which states that all communications are symbolic and based on interaction meaning. Blumer in 1969 established this theory defining it as the process of interaction in the formation of meanings for individuals.
The Symbolic Interactionism theory is based on three core assumptions about the creation of a person’s self and socialization into a larger community. The key assumptions are meaning which states that people act towards people and things as per the meaning they attach to those people or objects. Language as another assumption give people means to negotiate meanings through symbols and speech. Finally, thoughts enable a person to modify actions and symbols. This theory is essential in analyzing human interaction.The use ‘the looking glass self’ makes people take the role of the other, imagining how they look to another person. Without talk, there would be no sense of self-concept and language. In the community, the generalized other is the common response and expectations picked up from people within the community naturally giving more weight to the views of significant others.
From people giving way for others to pass, the watch of streetlights to go green so as people can cross the road and people rise from the seats and others taking up the space, it is evident that people can take interpretation of actions to develop meaning.
At this place, there is a lot of non-verbal communication with people interpreting expressions and signs from others. It is rare to find another person going an extra mile to talk to a stranger other than his or her acquaintances. Those who move to the park alone would either take up seats and get busy with their own stuff or choose to lie on the grass around the park. There are minimal loud noises from people other than the automobiles moving around and a continuous movement in and out the park is observable.
