URBANISM AND SUBURBANISM
There are questions that one would come up with after reading these two books. With regard to the book “Introduction to Modernity”, most of the questions as well as comments would be much focused on critics of the so-called “New Town” in contrast to the village that this author claims to live in. The first question would be why the town was constructed beside the village where most of the people living on its surrounding are “illiterate”. It would have been better if it were located near people who are somehow literate in order that they would be in a position to utilize the technology and other modern equipment within the town since they are now lying “idle”. Another question is why the life and things that constitute this town has become separated and have no specific kind of unity that describes them. This is contrasted with the life and environment within the village where everything has some kind of relationship with each other which unlike the situation in town, makes everything about it interesting. One would also want to know why the author wonders of the reason the town is more focused on material things, the tough rules guiding operations within it as well as the profit they derive from it (Lefebvre, 1995).
When reflecting on the other book “Urbanism and Suburbanism” questions as well as comments that would be brought forward are more focused on critics of the concept of urbanism. One question would be why the author argues that generalization of urban area cannot be derived from the study concerning social dynamics relating to inner city. One would also be curious to get an explanation of the reason as to why suburbs have a close connection to urban areas and ways in which they do not fit the description that considers them as two separate entities. Lastly, one would like to get the author’s description of people living in urban region that would be better than the one given by Wirthian, that the author criticizes (Gans, 1991).
