An essay is a type of a written assignment, frequent in educational practice, which enables learners to develop, discuss and explain a certain topic. An essay typically consists of three main parts: It has a part that is an introduction, body consisting of several sections and a conclusion.
The introduction is mainly used to introduce the topic under discussion and the overall outline of the discussion or the proposed thesis statement. This should grab the attention of the reader and give the overall summary of what the essay is all about. A body consists of two or more paragraphs, usually, the major concepts of the paper are elaborated and illustrated with facts in it. Topic sentence of the paragraph containing information on the thesis should be followed by information that relates to it and should not exceed one hundred words. The next few statements should expand on this claim, by using research facts, examples and quotes from authorities. Organization within a text is very crucial when writing and when transitioning from one idea to the next one, transition words and phrases are very useful.
Lastly, the conclusion brings out the finding of the body in relation to the thesis statement. It should come to a satisfying conclusion so that a reader can remember it for a long time. It should not introduce new information concerning the consequence of the argument but may briefly discuss the overall impact.
Effective essay writing involves several stages: Identify the stages of the process such as: brainstorming, research, writing, editing and proofing. It becomes applicable during the development of ideas and in the course of mentally categorizing the ideas.
