Peer Pressure/Influence

Peer Pressure, Textbook p381-382 and WebMD (http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/peer-pressure

Peer pressure refers to the influence; positive or negative, peers have on one another. It works on the notion that since everyone is doing it then I should also do it (webMD). Peer pressure is certainly expected in teen years. Teens who are invited to parties where alcohol and drugs are present are likely to find themselves getting involved in drugs or alcohol most probably from a suggestion from a peer. Most teens are also likely to engage in sex from the talk of friends about having sex with their boyfriends and girlfriends (webMD).

The desire to fit in a group is what makes most teens give in to negative peer pressure. Most will feel that if they do not engage in activities of the group, they may be rejected or feel out of place. Therefore, many engage in activities that negatively influence their lives simply because they want to belong, or rather, be accepted in a group.
