Culture and Ethnicity in South Asia

Ethnicity South Asia

Culture and ethnicity are intertwined and often difficult to distinguish. In addition, one cannot change ethnicity (Del Casino, Knox, Liverman, Marston, & Robbins, 2013). Ethnicity involves traits people are born with including place of origin, biological features, and genetic backgrounds. Some of the countries are named after the ethnic groups dominating them, subjecting others to risk of discrimination. There are experiences of political halt due to religious, political and ethnic differences and the multi-ethnicity that exist. Some of the countries have many ethnic groups that are recognizable, and it is obvious that due to their differences, they have to conflict.

The ethnic tensions in Sri Lanka arise due to multiple reasons that interconnect in one way or another as part of the historical processes that the country has undergone. The historical conditions under which tension emerges in the country include ethnic politics, politics of language and education and demographic aspects. The tension within the state has propelled from issue-based to the conflict that has led to destruction of property and loss of life on several occasions (Del Casino et al., 2013). Pakistan is one highly populated country with multiethnic groups, several differences from their ideology, practice, and politics. Politics is the leading cause of ethnic violence in the country together with the war to end extremism.

Ethnic conflict in India spurs from its complex multiethnic composition and the religious diversity. The country’s administrative boundary does not coincide with ethnic boundaries and thus different people coexist within similar regions. However, regional conflicts have emerged within the country based on the differences. Bhutan is another country in the South Asia, and the ethnic identity plays a critical role in the tension within the state. The socio-political intrigues and growing ethnic identity within communities do not come in good light. Ethnicity arises when people identify themselves as different from the rest for various reasons.
