Strasbourg: Symbol of a United Europe Video

Strasbourg: Symbol of a United Europe

The video in program three of the power of place, the geography of the 21st Century focusing on supranationalism and devolution gave a description of Strasbourg and Slovakia. The case study on Strasbourg as a symbol of the United Europe brings about the aspect of culture difference between the French and Germans in the City. The city, which is in France, presents prosperity that depicts it as a symbol of the United Europe because of the peaceful coexistence within the community. The geographic content in the video is the demographic distribution and location of resources as well as the map showing developments of the region.

The part of video that attracted my attention was on the map indicating location of the city at the border point and how free border movement got approval from French administration. This is very interesting, as it is expected of a developed nation to have stringent rules limiting the cross-border movement and foreign ownership of assets within its boundaries. The unity and trust between the two countries, however, shape the distribution of social, political and economic activities between the two nations through the border city. What I found most interesting about the topic of this video is on picking of the city to represent unity of the continent just because of the influence of culture and experience of the people living there.

Peaceful coexistence supports distribution of activities and benefits the people of a community. The river between the two countries acts as a natural boundary though the citizens can freely move to conduct their operations across the borders. The video shows location of the city central to the region giving indication that it is best suited to support the unity of Europe based on its rooted culture and practices too. The explanation of commitment of the region's solidarity to promote democracy and supranational issues within their boundaries is making the topic come alive supported by the maps on the presentation.
