Gender stereotypes
I have realized in live in a sea of beliefs and assumptions, which in this context I refer, to as stereotypes associated with my gender. However, while some stereotypes may be correct others are not in resonance with reality. For example, one correct stereotype is that being a female, am likely to take longer in knowing how to operate a newly acquired electronic gadget. I am also likely to ask more for directions while traveling to new places. However, this stereotype may not apply to all women. Many men have also depended on much training to operate electronic gadgets or even seeking directions to their destinations with little or no hesitations. I have also witnessed other women wander for two hours in the past and finally made it to their destination yet they bypassed many people who would have quickly directed them. Another stereotype I always encounter is other people especially men having a positive attitude towards me even when we are strangers just because they believe that being a female am likely to be warmer and friendlier than a male. Unfortunately, bias stereotype has also caught me on the wrong side of my gender. I once missed promotion to a higher position where I was the only qualified personnel in the company. The chief executive officer of the company I was working with treated me with discrimination just because he doubted on my ability based on being a woman. The position was awarded to a less academically qualified man with fewer skills and experience than I had.
In my opinion, one of the ways to combat gender stereotypes is by appraising individuals for instance at workplaces based on their performances. Another way is to ensure quality education for all. For instance, if women would learn more they would become more powerful and useful they knowledge as a tool against biases against their gender. Males should also move more into female-dominated zones and vice versa and campaign against discrimination against gender. Last yet importantly any individual that feels is sidelined on the bases of gender should always be ready to speak against the vice.
