Reflection
Discuss effective encoding techniques (at least 2) that you use to study, how you know they are effective, and why they are effective
Organizing information is an effective encoding technique because our memory requires information to be organized so that it can be recalled more efficiently. When words are stored in groups it is easy to recall them and takes less time to retrieve. You will remember specific information based on how it was organized, for example using a tree diagram.
Generating information is the ability to recall information in your mind without looking at the text. Those people who are able to generate information perform better compared to those who memorize terms and forget them after some time.
Discuss ineffective encoding techniques (at least 1) that you use to study, how you know they are ineffective, and why they are ineffective
Ineffective encoding is the inability to recall information because it was not stored in long-term memory. The information will not be available for use at a later date. Lack of attention is an ineffective encoding technique where a student reads paying attention to TV and the information is likely to be forgotten.
Stipulate 2 ways that you could make your study time more efficient, and why those would work
Giving myself enough time to study to avoid last minute rush. This could be achieved by setting a timetable to be followed daily to make sure that all the subjects are covered early enough to avoid cramming the last minute. This would work well because I would give each subject enough time and balance them the way I am comfortable for better understanding. I would also discuss with other people and explain to them what I have already read. This would help me to get it clear in my mind and know where I need to read again. Discussion groups also help to know the answers to questions that are difficult where members of the group are able to answer.
