We have looked at a lot of cultural productions from the Harlem Renaissance -- literature, poetry, essays, music, and now art.  We have seen "authentic" and even iconic music and poetry written by both black and (occasionally) white Americans, and seen attempts by both blacks and whites to conform to some kind of middle class ideal.   Going back to Langston Hughes' essay, in which he wrote about the young man who did not want to be known as a "negro artist," what did being a "negro artist" seem to mean for one of the painters you looked at this week?
