A good persuasive essay can be seen as a key for making the reader change mind and regard a certain matter from a certain perspective. The outcome of a persuasive essay depends on how well strong opinions prove them and provide support, at the same time staying organized, and in doing so, appeal to the readers’ emotions and the logic of their reasoning.
The penetration of a good persuasive essay starts with the come up of the thesis statement. This statement should provide the reader with the general stand that the essay is going to take with regards to the issue being analyzed. It is a reference point for the rest of the content within the essay; all content that comes after must be in support of this thesis statement. For instance, if the thesis statement reads “School uniform should be worn in public schools” then the essay has to make a point in support of this statement at all times.
Argumentation involves findings which form the basis for building the best argument. An ideal persuasive essay should contain backup information that the writer uses to back his/her opinions. Such evidence may include statistical information, witnesses’ opinions, case study, factual details and any other relevant information. Concisely, by utilizing credible sources one boosts the authority of the argument and convinces the reader. For example, while advocating for a policy that seeks to adopt school uniforms, referring various research findings which have indicated that schools that require students to wear uniforms will act and perform better in class is persuasive.
A clear organization is also for the essay writing. As it has been mentioned, a persuasive essay has an intro, body and conclusion sections. In general, the introduction is the first and the most important part of the social issue discussion as it must attract the reader’s attention, inform about the subject, and state the author’s purpose. Hence, each body should contain a single idea related to the thesis to be supported with data and analyzed in the subsequent.
Therefore, every paragraph should contain a single idea related to the thesis statement to be aided by data and analysis. Finally, the sequence between ideas should be natural, and the smooth transitions should have been made from one paragraph of the essay to the other. The end of the paper should briefly discuss the main ideas of the paper and reflect upon the thesis statement using the information provided in the paper; the conclusion should end with the call to action or a question.
This can be regarded as one of the primary types of persuasion since the element of emotion also occupies a very important place in the process. Passionate and moving language is a powerful weapon, which should be used for making the audience interested in the writer’s opinion; for doing so, one needs to use stories, examples, pathos, ethos and logos. For instance, when writing on the necessity to have standard outfit in school, a writer may narrate an experience of how a student felt good and concentrated because of wearing uniforms.
The third persuasive element is ethos and this is followed by pathos before coming to logos. The essay should have realization and reason that form clear progression, and are easy to follow. This has to do with use of simple logic and a proper presentation of counterarguments. Considering and responding to counter-arguments widens the readers’ knowledge on the subject thus supporting the overall argument.
Thus, it is possible to conclude that a successful persuasive essay has a clearly stated thesis, adequate and logically structured arguments, and an appeal to the readers’ emotions. The logical sequence of the information ending with the call to perform an action, appeal to the writers’ and readers’ emotions, and the use of logical appeals help the author successfully complete a persuasive essay.
