Aging is more problematic for men than women. Agree or disagree?
I agree that aging is more problematic for men than women because retirement from work that men do daily especially those who are employed is very difficult. Work brings a sense of self-esteem, achievement as well as recognition in the society. When men become old they feel like they are not respected anymore because they are no longer productive and cannot fit in a competitive environment. Retirement for men feels complicated due to the loss of the status as well as influence. They argue that when they were working in different offices and needed something to be done for them, it would be done immediately but at old age, they realize that nobody is there to offer immediate service to them on demand (Weil, 2007).
Men have a problem of asking for help even when they need it most. When men are sick, it is very hard for them to seek immediate medical attention. This becomes serious when they wait until the illness has reached advanced stages when it becomes very expensive to seek treatment that would have been done earlier at a cheaper price. Also, men do not reveal their weaknesses, worries, and emotions even to their spouse. This leads to depression and mental problems that result in high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke (Weil, 2007).
Aging becomes a problem for men who engage in behaviors that have high risks such as heavy drinking, smoking, and drug abuse. This affects the immune system and makes them age quickly as well as become more prone to infections that affect their health. Some suffer from lung diseases that reduce their life expectancy. When their body becomes weak due to infections it becomes very difficult to enjoy their old age because they will always be in and out of hospitals seeking for medical help and it becomes very expensive for them especially at a time when they have retired and less productive (Thompson & Kaye, 2013).
