A Summary of CYMBELINE
Cymbeline, the Britain King is a widower with two sons who were later kidnapped leaving him with the only daughter, Imogan. The queen gave birth to Cloten and wanted Imogan to marry Cloten. I think this was not possible because of the blood relationship the two had. Imogan disobeyed and married Posthumus. Due to the anger of the King, he imprisoned Imogan and banished Posthumus to Rome where he met Philario. While at Rome, he worked for Lachimo whom I think he hired with an intension to woo Imogan. Lachimo did not succeed and instead decided to steal Imogan’s bracelet to assure Posthumus. Due to anger, Posthumus sent Pisanio to kill Imogan.
I think Imogan was clever since he decided to disguise her as Fidele and send her to Milford Haven where she met her brothers and Belarius. Cloten went to Milford Haven disguised as Posthumus to woo Imogan. Guiderius at Milford Haven killed Cloten. I think God used Cornelius so that Imogan and Posthumus do not die and so he gave medicine to the queen instead of the poison. When Imogan fell sick, she took medicine given to her by Pisanio. She fell asleep and Belarius placed her against dead Cloten.
I think Lucius’ visit and war were a plan. Lucius had visited Cymbeline demanding tribute to Rome and Cymbeline refused leading to a war with Rome. The queen fell sick and died due to the war and the Cloten’s disappearance. At the end, the queen admits hating Cymbeline on her dead bed, Imogan returns to the rescued Cymbeline and later on married Posthumus. Cymbeline does not punish Lachimo or Belarius (Shakespeare 43).
