International and Internal Migration

Respond to the short essay prompt below. You must utilize theories and specific examples from the readings to construct and support your arguments.
1. International and Internal Migration: Recent research shows changing trends in international and internal migration. Some research shows that immigrants old and
new are increasingly moving to suburbs and towns rather than inner cities. In particular, Hispanic and Asian migrants are moving to suburbs and towns from cities like New York and LA after years in the United States, while others are settling directly into suburbs and towns immediately upon arrival in the US. On the other hand, research also demonstrates how native-born individuals and non-Hispanic whites are recently returning from the suburbs to move back into cities. We can also see this in our personal experiences in New York City, where gentrification and the commercialization of residential spaces is exacerbating residential segregation.
This could have a couple possible effects on how native-born individuals and immigrants encounter each other. In one scenario, immigrants and native-born individuals would form small enclaves in the areas they move into and associate largely amongst themselves for work, school, and friendships - much like migration to an enclave neighborhood in a city such as Washington Heights, East Harlem, or Jackson Heights. In another scenario immigrants and native-born individuals would be much more integrated.
Describe these recent trends in international and internal migration in the United States. How has this contributed to issues such as social inequality? How do you think these emerging settlement and internal migration patterns will influence how immigrants are integrated into the United States? Will it increase contact between immigrants and native born individuals? Or will it be much the same as urban immigration where ethnic enclaves arise and ethnic groups live segregated from one another?
Guidelines/Directions:
Content
Remember, your paper must demonstrate your knowledge of the readings, use specific examples from as many relevant readings possible
Include a strong and clear thesis statement in the introduction, notifying the reader of your main arguments
Draw from course materials and assignments to build and support your arguments Use specific examples, dates, figures, etc. to strengthen your points (for example:
"In the United States, life expectancy increased from 'xx' years to 'xx' years for men between the years 1900 and 2000.")
Remember to make connections between changes in numbers with historical events and social institutions (i.e. medical advancements from WWII, the invention and widespread use of vaccines, etc.)
Your political views and anecdotes should supplement your arguments; but they should not construct your main arguments
