Topic 3 – Channel of Communication, Textbook p.244
One of my friends at the university in the town I lived in some years back was from Africa. He had a daughter whom he communicated with only through the phone. PR first began by talking to his wife then his daughter. He always put the phone on the loudspeaker mode, arguing that this made him feel that he was speaking to his family face to face. He stared at the phone every time he spoke with his family.
Every time PR spoke to his daughter, I saw his eyes well up. His daughter would ask so many questions like, “Why can’t I see you dad?” PR had left his country when the daughter was about two months old. He had been here for about two and a half years now. His daughter could not understand why her father had to be so far away.
I came to realize that PR’s daughter desired so much to have a face-to-face communication with her dad. Though PR tried as much as possible to keep a relationship through communication over the phone, his daughter yearned for more than that, she wanted to see her dad.
