Why Social Stratification is Universal
Social stratification is universal as it can be seen anywhere in the world as societies get organized to function on different premises. According to the conflict theory, conflict and not function is what makes social stratification universal. In this regard, I feel that no society that exists if not organized as there must be people who lead while others follow making the conflict view of social stratification resonate with me. The fact that human beings are natured to be self-centered makes them use their power to seize greater rewards for themselves other than the rewards being provided.
I find people occupying least positions obviously performing more functions and being less powerful than those who occupy higher positions in real life as those in the least positions cannot accrue many resources for themselves as compared to those occupying powerful positions. Even in our current world, people in power use resources in the society to benefit themselves and oppress their followers, which is the reason for continued struggle as the oppressed try to overcome that domination. Revolution comes when the oppressed come to reality of them being dominated and start rebelling.
I feel that through conflict theory capitalism controls the world as elite nations dominate over the rest and power shifts as capital is being shuffled among nations whereby in every society that may be seen to be calm, lies conflict that is yet to erupt. The people who accumulate most resources such as our politicians and businesspersons become the elite, but such people rule only after fighting over the surplus and winning (which bring the idea of the conflict theory). In my opinion, the generations coming after, will find societies stratified not on merit but accumulation of resources due to conflicts that are continually emerging.
