Prejudice and Discrimination
Prejudice is an attitude or belief whereas discrimination is an action because of one's prejudice involving unfair treatment against an individual based on different characteristics that a person may overlook against another and such actions are very significant in our day-to-day life. I have experienced on different occasions both positive and negative prejudice, where my virtues were either exaggerated and on some instances judged as inferior based on their association with me and the preference towards myself. In both instances, the prejudices either came from the people whom I was very close to or have had close association with and those that I have not had one on one association with at a point, who only centered on their own knowledge or beliefs.
I have been discriminated against on several occasions maybe due to my height, weight, age, speech, marital status, religion or political association. However, I have not experienced discrimination in terms of sexual orientation, sex, clothing, income, disease or disability. It is amazing how people can develop prejudice against a person and develop attitude even if there has never had association with them at any point in time. For instance, a group of people who were closely related to a friend simply because I did not share similar religious views with them once barred me from their forum. My own friend could not come out to my defense since all those who were in that forum belonged to the same religious group with similar religious views that they assumed I never supported. Even though I have never shared a forum with any of them on matters religion that could grant them such presumption, they still opposed my presence.
