Due Week 3 (by 9/10/17)- Administer Piagetian tasks to students at specific age levels. (see handout  Weekly Assignments Handouts 5.1-5.3.docxPreview the documentView in a new window )

·         Piagetian Task (Handouts 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3)

·         a) Design and gather the materials for one Piagetian task at either the concrete operational or formal operational level. Use a conventional task, or else design one of your own based on what you know about Piagetian stages. Three examples of tasks are presented in Handouts 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3.

·         b) Present this task to one of the following: A preschool or kindergarten student (ages 3-5), a child in grades 1-3 (ages 6-9), a child in grades 4-6 (ages 9-12), or a high school or college student (but not someone who has taken or is taking a class in educational or developmental psychology). Use people that you know personally. Make sure that you determine both what the student’s answer is and his/her reasoning (logic) behind the answer. You may need to question the student in more than one way before you find out what he/she is really thinking.

·         c) Write a description of your experience:

(1)   The task—more specifically, the materials and the question(s) you asked

(2)   Description of your students (age, grade level, gender)

(3)   Each student’s verbal and behavioral responses

(4)   Your interpretation of these responses:

·         What can you deduce about each student’s capabilities?

·         Do your observations confirm Piaget’s observations about characteristics typical of different stages and ages?

·         How might you explain your observations in terms of information processing theory (e.g., considering such factors as prior knowledge, metacognition, etc., that may have played a role in reasoning and performance)?

 

d)    After reading the chapters and viewing the videos-

·         What is your personality type and how do you think it was developed (use what you learned from chapter 3 to answer this question)?

·         According to what you learned from chapter 4, what cultural differences surprise you?
