Introduction
When developing system software, data security is one of the key concepts that must be considered. To ensure that access of vital data is restricted, marking domains as “internal use only” is a criteria that is commonly used. The medicine industry especially requires high level of confidentiality while at the same time data sharing within various stakeholders in the medicine industry is significant to service delivery (Mishra, Mishra, Simita, 2006). In this paper, we analyze some of the domains that should be marked as “internal use only” in the medicine industry.
Management information systems
Management information systems domains have a special relationship and interaction with other systems within the entire computerized system in the company. Each player in the medicine industry has salient features in its management that would not be allowed to be accessed by “strangers” to the system. Data entry to such systems is thus controlled to ensure chances of hacking are minimized and that only important data is input. Efficiency and accuracy is significant in management of medicine industry where any mistake could be gambling with human life (Mishra, Mishra, Simita 2006).
Management information systems are used to control all other system software including the database. Any unauthorized and unsanctioned access into management information systems could lead to access to the company databases that would be corrupted or data contained there-in used for wrong purposes (Ferre, Lukose, Madalina, 2010).
Decision support systems
Decision support systems domains are used in the medicine industry to ensure that all decisions that are made are credible, viable, in line with the company policies and timely. With such a great task being carried out by the domains, they are affected by “internal use only” standard. Some of the decisions that are supported by these domains include; marking of medicine in the inventory, certifying that medicine are not expired, marching patient data with database to determine diagnosis, developing codes and passwords for the staff among other vital decisions. The weight of each of the decisions cited above cannot be underestimated and thus decision support systems must always be in the control of the management. Using “internal use only” standard on these domains ensures that only the company’s management controls data activity in such domains thus all responsibility on the output is correctly bore by the management.
Database domains
A database is a pool of different sets of data, which acts like a warehouse. Internal controls must ensure that data that is input into the company databases is correct, final and intelligent. Company databases contain almost all the secrets of the company and thus entry to the domain must be strict. Database domains are affected by “internal use only” standard since any non-intelligent data entered could result to great changes to the system (Ferre, Lukose, Madalina, 2010). For example, wrong data on patients could lead to wrong procurement logistics. This would lead also lead to dangers to the lives of patients any even legal action against the company.
Conclusion
The above three domains are examples of domains that are affected by “internal use only” domains. As noted in the introduction, this standard is aimed at ensuring data security and efficiency in logistics and decision-making. Constant review of domains affected by this standard should be done to maintain high level of data security in the company.
