Teaching Gender 2
Discuss the various ways in which boys and girls are different
Boys and girls are different because boys like robot and cars while girls like dolls. Boys are more active in physical activities like jumping, running and playing ball while girls are less active. Boys are more physically aggressive compared to girls, boys confront each other even when playing but girls do not. On average, girls start talking earlier than boys and girls have larger vocabularies compared to boys. Girls are potty trained earlier than boys and master the skills very fast. The eye contact of boys is less while girls figure out the emotions of people basing on their facial expressions.
Discuss how we as individuals and also as a culture create and then nurture those differences between boys and girls
We as individuals create and then nurture those differences between boys and girls through encouraging them to be strong and emphasizing on the skills that they should have. Nurture is the main factor in developing human characteristics which are influenced by genes and abilities that are inherited. In every culture, some practices promote specific behaviors that are appropriate for boys and others for girls. Nurture involves environmental influences on how boys and girls are raised after conception which includes the level of attachment, values, and beliefs as well as attention from the caregivers.
Comment on whether you got the riddle right
I did not get the riddle right because I thought the surgeon was the biological father of the son. My assumption was that the son was conceived out of wedlock and the surgeon was able to recognize his son, though he did not marry the son's mother. However, the answer provided for the riddle is valid.
Comments on whether you think our culture and understanding of gender roles should change
I think our culture and understanding of gender roles should change because if we retain the traditional roles of women, their ability to work and earn a living will is affected. The status of men in society will still remain even if more women engage in income-generating activities. The change is necessary because men have been struggling to be the sole breadwinner in the family and women believe in earning less with the difficult time in getting promotions at workplace.
