Gestalt Therapy
Contrast Gestalt therapy with the Adlerian Therapy
Gestalt therapy emphasizes that the body predicts what happens to an individual and counseling helps to change behaviors in our lives. The behaviors which are observed are used since they help the clients be aware of their emotions and what they are thinking about. According to Gestalt theorists, for the clients to be successful the qualities that are within them are needed to help them solve their problems. For growth to occur, awareness is very important for one to improve and change behavior for better.
Adlerian therapy main focus is the client as a whole by considering feeling of inferiority as normal since it encourages them to succeed. Adlerian understand every aspect of an individual which includes early childhood experiences, experiences in life and family background that lead to the current problems. Therapists understand that behavior of human beings is neither as a result of environmental nor hereditary factors. The focus is on modifying distorted thinking of clients to initiate proper ways of behaving as well as thinking.
What I observe in this video that is different from the therapy I chose for contrast is that Frasier has made different achievement in life and even received awards. However, after self-analysis and looking at the life he has been living, he wonders why he feels so empty. Many people whom he has helped did not expect that and Niles is assured that even if he does not receive awards, he is still a good psychiatrist.
What did you observe in this video that is the SAME between Gestalt therapy and the contrast therapy you chose in question 1
In both it is difficult to measure the success or effectiveness of therapy because it depends on the opinions and beliefs of the clients. Clients’ belief that they will get the value for their money therefore expects the therapy to be effective in providing solution to their problems. In both the treatment is effective in eradication mistaken belief that the clients have to overcome inferiorities and fears to help them become responsible people.
Why does the empty chair technique help clients?
The empty chair technique helps clients to express themselves freely without interruption and without anybody to question them. There is nobody to judge them even if they say something negative. When talking to an empty chair, the clients can use any method and release all the burdens that they have and the pain would go away. The clients can solve problems in relationships by getting a good moment to speak what is in their mind and the perception they have for the behavior to reveal the areas that change is needed. Empty chair technique will enable therapists to help clients in developing communication skills as they express their thoughts as well as emotions. The experience helps client to develop self-control of their feelings and know the best words to use so that their partner can understand them better.
. If you were to do what Frasier did, what would you say to yourself? How would that conversation go? Write a transcript of at least 10 lines of you performing that activity with yourself.
I would ask myself the following questions:
Do I appreciate myself the way I am?
Do I treat myself well?
Do I speak positive things about myself?
Do I recognize my strength?
Am I attending to my physical and health needs?
What are my goals in life?
Do I blame myself for the things that are out of my control?
Do I turn to addictions to forget my feelings?
Do I focus on taking care of the needs of other people?
I am feeling appreciated in my relationship?
What did I learn from the exercise?
I learnt that the psychiatrists do a lot of work and sometimes they are not appreciated. They offer therapy but even themselves go through difficult situations and challenges in life. They feel empty when something is missing in their life and also need someone to help them. Therapists need to get someone to listen to their problems because they are human beings who have problems that need solutions.
