A good research paper is one of the most valuable academic products that reflects student’s critical thinking, research, and writing skills. There are certain essential stages involved in completion of a good research: selection of the most interesting topic, research, structure of the paper, and conclusion.
Selection of a good topic for research forms the basis of every good academic research paper. Ideally, a good topic should be one which is informative and would be able to be explored further. It should be precise enough to guide the research while at the same time being generic enough to offer enough information to the study. For example, instead of selecting the topic as “global warming”, the topic like “Effects of global warming on the Arctic animals” is more specific, focused and adds more value to existing body of knowledge.
To generate a good research paper, adequate research has to be conducted. This involves collecting data mostly through research done on various peer reviewed journals, books, and reliable websites. A good example of such a paper is one that involves different viewpoints and sources materials to back up the writer’s ideas. Punctuation and citing bibliography are important so as not to infringe on the works and ideas of other writers. It is notable that both types, primary and secondary sources, can contribute to the study, more specifically diversify it and give a more extensive coverage to the topics involved.
Clarity is the other sub element of good research paper and so is organization. There are usually the following sections in a structure paper: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, discussion and conclusion. Every part of the paper should directly follow one another providing the reader with a smooth flow of going through the process followed and results obtained. In other words, while the introduction lays down the research question or thesis statement the literature review situates the research by reviewing prior studies. The methodology part of the paper describes how this study was executed, the result part of the paper highlights more of what was determined while the discussion part gives a detailed analysis of the findings in relation to the research question. The last part of a paper should include the reiteration of the major findings and the recommendation of ideas to be studied in the future.
There is need for clear and consistency presentation of the research. Effective papers are always written in simple and straight-forward formal language. This makes sense and the arguments should be clear with each of the points that are being raised supported by something tangible. It is important the paper should have no grammatical issues and the work should also be very well written for understanding. Editing and proofreading are the last processes that a writer has to complete to meet such standards in a paper.
Summing up, it can be stated that good research papers involve a proper choice of a topic, as well as extensive investigation, proper structuring and conspicuous presentation. They show the writer’s knowledge and understanding of a subject area, his/her capability to analyze data as well as present the results he/she has arrived at in written form. Due to these qualities, research papers become useful forums in academic discussions and a necessity to any scholar’s success stories.
