After having read the
excerpt from Garfinkel’s Studies in Ethnomethodology, you are to conduct a
small-scale “breaching experiment.” This will require you to violate a social norm
and to record what happens in response to your norm violation. You will need to
collect data, describe your data collection process and discuss your findings.
However, all this means is that you attempt a breaching experiment with a friend or
acquaintance (it need only be once and you can select the norm you’d like to
break*), discuss what you did, and then describe the results. Your write-up
shouldn't be any longer than 1-2 pages.
