Topic 4 – Free Rider, Textbook p.273
In one of our discussion groups in campus, there was a man whom everyone complained. JP seemed to be gifted with intelligence, but the group members always complained that he contributed nothing to the discussions. He only appended his name to the assignment paper.
JP never talked during the discussions and whenever he did, it was nothing related to the topic at hand. He would stay silent during the whole session of the discussion. He, however, would insist that his name be included in the paper amidst protests from the group members. Another thing about our group was that every member used to contribute some money that was used to buy snacks at the end of every discussion. Members would enjoy the snacks together as this helped a lot in bonding. As expected, JP never contributed a dime but he was the first to join the celebration, enjoying the most. This would exasperate most of the members forcing the snacks project to come to a halt. This situation almost broke up the group.
JP was the free rider in our group. He enjoyed all the benefits of our group but never gave anything in return. He only sought to get the most from the group but giving nothing or very little to it. JP’s action led every member to wish for the end of the semester. The group finally broke up.
