Workplace bullying
Workplace bullying is psychological harassment through verbal comments, gestures as well as actions that affect the dignity of employees resulting in a harmful work environment. My thought regarding this common problem is that there is the humiliation of employees through this cruel and offensive behavior, where an attempt to undermine them can affect their productivity.
How might you address this issue as a nurse leader?
As a nurse leader, I might address this issue by creating an environment where nurses report any case of bullying without fear of victimization. Promotion of teamwork as well as team-building so that they are sensitive to each other's needs and encourage creativity. I would enhance loyalty as well as a strong sense of belonging to improve the productivity of all nurses. As a nurse leader, I would make the nurses understand the adverse effects of bullying and provide guidelines for acceptable behavior at work (Rocker, 2008).
Bullying behaviors
Bullying behaviors include intimidating others by threatening them about disciplinary procedures. Writing abusive letters to other co-workers and criticizing them in public. There is undermining of personal values as well as beliefs of other employees. Also, monitoring the behaviors of others by reporting to the supervisors when unproductive. The act of refusing to guide new employees who need assistance as well as yelling at other co-workers.
Causes of bullying
The causes of bullying include poor relationships at work, low support from the supervisor, increasing workload, and nursing shortage, resulting in understaffing. Those who take drugs and alcohol may result in bullying others as well as having patients and families who are hostile.
Effects of bullying
The victims of bullying experience isolation and feel inadequate as they work. They fear reporting to work, as they are ashamed secretly and confused about how they can fight back. They get sick because of stress where they show symptoms of depression, weight loss, insomnia as well as headache. There is a decrease in self-esteem and suicide due to criticism and hostility at the workplace.
Potential solutions to bullying
The development of anti-bullying programs is prime to teach the principles of avoiding bullying. The involvement of employees in the development of policies helps them to be responsible and take ownership of the work environment. Setting time for bullying awareness ensures the work environment is bully-free and creates the opportunity to learn to become a leader (Rocker, 2008).
