In any form of art, the artists have various elements that are used to draw the attention of the audience and bring his point home. Some of the elements that are employed in drawing and painting include; line, texture, shape, space, form, value as well as color (Good & Margret, 2013). This paper has criticized the painting of an anonymous panter attached below especially in the usage of the above elements.
The first site
On the first sight of the above picture, I saw a shore, which is under a great hurricane of storm. The storms have raised both the waters and the dust along the shore. The shore has patches of shallow and deep waters (Unwin, 2003).
Color
The first element that catches the eye of the audience when the above painting is presented is the color. The color selection of the painting is both critical and suspicious. While it is clear that the painter portrays a view of a shore, he has not used the traditional sea blue color that is iconic of the large water bodies. He uses brown and black, which are all dark colors and reflections of orange and yellow (Good & Margret, 2013). This color selection leads to two possible conclusions by the audience. The first probable conclusion is that the painter showed the shore in the evening. If this is the case, the black section represents the darkness of the coming night while the yellow rays show the reflections of the setting sun. On the other hand, the audience may also conclude that the hurricane has caused fire, which is being reflected on the shore by the yellow rays. The brown surface on the panting has been used for the shallow places on the shore where water has been swiped by the storm (Webster, 2012).
Icons
An icon is an object that is used to represent a certain scenario on a paper. It may be a replica of the item being represented or a picture, which is easily identifiable by the audience. In the above picture, there are visible diming rays (Webster, 2012). These rays are iconic of either the setting sun or the fire according to the interpretation that the audience may have. In addition, the painter has used a stream like flow to represent water moving back to the water mass from the onshore. Dark images on the shore are used to represent life along the coast. At the far right of the drawing, the painter shows the clouds that are forming slowly. This is an icon of conventional rainfall evidenced every evening around large water bodies (Unwin, 2003).
Line
There are different usages of line in the above drawing. The first line is used to show different altitudes of the ground and thus the gentleness of the slope along the show. Secondly, the painter has used line element in showing the steams that are formed by the waters moving back to the water mass form onshore. Line is also used to show the level of the clouds, which are low. The clouds as explained further more in this paper are iconic of the conventional rainfall (Good & Margret, 2013).
Theme
The painter draws his theme from the variety of elements that have been discussed earlier in the paper. The creative selection of color and line help the painter to create a stormy but relative calm view of the shore in the evening. The audience can easily tell that the drawing was taken from a side view as the painter was watching the tides rise and lower at sunset (Unwin, 2003).
