Cohabitation may have been looked into by many researchers but then with each one of them having a different view on it. In my point of view, cohabitation is more appropriate for future couples since it enhances the relationship stability, which is a key pathway towards formal marriage.
I consider couples in cohabitation to be stable in the sense that they get to know each other better. Cohabiting individuals get to put up with their partner’s behavior especially regarding alcohol, smoking and other substance abuse of which they tend to speak about them with the aim of discouraging them and even devising ways of how to help their partners out of it. This brings about a bond between couples since most of them get to find some sense of belonging and appreciation.
Cohabitation is also out of free consent. Couples tend to choose for themselves those with whom they want to cohabit. This enhances them on their decisions whether they really need to get into serious commitments like marriage with their partners or not.
At a social economic level, cohabiting couples are better managers in terms of resources. They both know each other better and this enables them know how to go around making ends meet to achieve their needs and on how to manage them to give out maximum output as opposed to when they would have gotten into marriage and find the unexpected
On security aspect, people who actually want marry each other make the best relationship to marriage during cohabitation. One can be sure whether there will be a tomorrow with your partner or not. A person’s true picture, behaviors and trends would come out while still cohabiting, rather than planning for a long-term commitment with someone who will or might leave when they discover something about you with which they could not put up. In my opinion, cohabitation makes people better future partners.
