YOUR BOOK PAPER OPTION: CROSSING THE BLVD
If you take this option, you can analyze (compare/contrast) 3-4 of the interviews. Do not re-tell the person’s description of his/her experiences, but analyze what is being said in the interview; and,compare/contrast what each person is saying to what two other people (interviewees):
The Pieterse article “3 Models of Globalization” (on Blackboard) and Steger’s Chapters 1 (Intro) and 5 Cultural Globalization) inform us about these aspects of cultural globalization:
How did past and present aspects of globalization influence/impact the 3-4 interviewees?
Topics can include: personal and group Identity; traditional cultural values in conflict with or having to adapt to or resisting a new set of American/New York cultural values; relationships (cooperative and
conflicting) with people of other cultures both from their own cultures and within mainstream culture;
Many Concepts (especially) from Pieterse and Steger (Ch.1 and 5) and this course can be applied to your analysis. These include: Glocalization; Urbanization; Intersectionality; Matrix of Domination;
Diversity; Racism/ Classism/ Sexism/ Ethnocentrism/ Religious Triumphalism/Abilism/Ageism;
Homogenization/ Convergence; McDonaldization; Cultural Differentialism; Hybridization (Hybridity);
Essentialism; the American Way of Life (table on pgs. 44-45); language and media issues;
Multiculturalism; Cultural Differentialism; Americanization; Corporatization; and many more.
