Topic 5 – Self-Awareness, Textbook p.280 and this website: http://www. Psychology.about.com/od/cognitivepsychology/fl/What-Is-Self-Awareness.htm
When my friend’s daughter approached adolescence, we started noticing that she became so conscious of herself that she started crossing her arms around her chest to hide the physical changes that were taking place in her body. She told her parents to get her brother out of her room. She also wore a pullover that was never removed even during the hottest of the periods.
It took the intervention of the parents to help her realize that the changes that were taking place in her body were normal and nothing to be embarrassed. This situation had made life difficult for my friend’s daughter. She became conscious of the changes in her body that made her aware for the first time that she was a girl. She started looking at her brother whom they were always playing with and even slept in the same room differently.
Were it not for the intervention of her parents, my friend’s daughter would have completely withdrawn from people. She had become so conscious of herself that it almost affected her relationship with other people. She came to appreciate the fact that she is a girl and her relationship with others was mended.
