A Story from the Teenage Years
My sister called me one day and told me she would like to meet me urgently. When I went to her place she told me that her sixteen-year-old daughter had changed a lot, she had become rude, cruel and gets angry easily. "she watches movie throughout the night and sleeps for only a few hours, she does not do any household chores that I assign to her when I left for work, she does not take care of her young siblings when I am not around, she takes liquor with friends at the nearest pub and fails to finish assignments given by the teachers leading to 2 weeks suspension when school reopens. The mother said". When I confront my daughter, this is how she responds, " Mum, you think I am a devil, every time you think I am on the wrong, you never appreciate even the little efforts that I put, sometimes I don't even recognize you as my mother, you see me as a good for nothing girl."
When I heard all that, I told my sister that at childhood children are taught what is appropriate and what is not, they go to only the places that parents allow them to go, they are humble and polite, in case they are wounded they run to the parents for help and the parents are very happy because everything is okay according to their plans. However, teenagers undergo changes where they are able to figure themselves out; their bodies and brains undergo reorganization, which leads to excitement, their decision making is poor and is not able to understand the cause and effect of the activities they engage in. As a parent, it is significant to understand the behavioral, cognitive and emotional limitations of teenagers in order to assist them and provide the necessary advice in a manner that they will appreciate.
