Topic 4 – Self Perception
The topic is found in the movie “The Walking Dead which is a horror movie involving zombies. In the series “self help”, Eugene sits at the back of a fire truck reading a book by H.G. Wells, “The Shape of the Things to Come.” The book speculates the future where a tragic plague would come and wipe away humanity. The choice of the book in such a movie is amazing. It is supposed that the plague would wipe out a large part of humanity leaving only the geniuses.
Eugene spreads a message about himself that is untrue. He had lied to be a scientist but now that the plague has come, he has no cure. He also considers himself a genius and appears to be best placed to lead the group trying to escape the plague. He is the one who saves Abraham from death. Abraham has put a gun in his mouth to kill himself. He has killed four people with his hands, which are now wounded. In so doing, he has killed his own family.
Eugene’s suggestion that they go to DC proves to be a healing process for the characters especially Abraham. His hands start to heal a symbol of the healing process. This is however short lived when Eugene makes a confession that enrages Abraham who beats him up. This act reopens the healing wound. Self-perception comes through the characters as they come to self-realization. Eugene’s self-perception is the one that leads the group on a mission to DC.
