Main duties
From my final analysis and observations, I can conclude that my internship at T&T Company is a success. The main reason for this success is that through my stay at the company I gained important work experience needed in my future career. The second reason for claiming success is that the company gained from my services and dedication. The company used my presence and my work as a measure of integration of new workers into the company. From my stay, the company will have the background knowledge needed in hiring of new employees. The tasks that I performed in the company therefore demonstrate the success that I achieved throughout my stay in the company.
My main tasks in the company during the few months I was in the internship mainly involved office duties. Through the internship, I realized that all things are possible with the right attitude and determination (Rampersad, 2009). I addition I had to carry out the office managerial duties in the absence of the office manager who could have worked as my supervisor. Secondly, the company is young with limited resources, and this provided me with a good starting point as an intern. I found it difficult to handle some difficult tasks that require advanced resources. Secondly, the company has few employees and therefore there is lack of specialization in the company. In my stay within the company, I was forced to take duties that were not within my scope as a management intern in order to keep the office and the company in operation. Although these challenges affected my output as an intern of the company, I worked hard to produce the best results for the company and for myself.
My main duties within the company revolved around keeping proper accounts of the daily activities within the company. I therefore had to ensure that all records were kept appropriately and according to the needs of the company. At the beginning of my internship in the company, I realized that the company lacked a good filing system and therefore I had to work through the existing filing system to produce an efficient system. The previous filing system applied in the company was an inefficient system since location of documents was very difficult. First, I worked on the file to remove redundant document and to arrange the important documents in a format that enabled easy retrieval. With a good filing system, I was able to handle the over-stretching tasks of filling for goods received and goods dispatched.
Good record keeping not only requires recording of occurrences but also the safekeeping of the recorded information. Maintaining of files was therefore my second important duty in the company since I had to ensure that all records were safe from external and internal violation. I therefore had to ensure that an unauthorized person could not access the company's files containing sensitive and confidential information. I had to work with IT professional within the company to ensure that the system I was working with had appropriate security.
The third task that formed my main duty in the company was the transferring of information. This involved availing the required information to the required person at the right time and in the correct format. In those particular duties I ensured that, I applied the correct technique to deliver information to the intended parties within the set period. This called for punctuality and accuracy that I maintained within my entire stay at T&T hauling company. Secondly, information is time sensitive and therefore as a manager charged with managing the company's information system, I had to keep time. Updating all personal files within the company formed my second important task in the company.
With all things set and working as required, my main duty was to ensure efficiency within the office work and on fieldwork. This required that I apply the management skills I learnt in college to reduce redundancy and to ensure that all the activities of the company were according to the objectives and goals of the company. Finally, I carried out the most important duty in the company by ensuring that the company's finances were utilized according to the goals and objectives of the company
Experience from T&T
Through the T&T internship, I gained experience that I could not have gained from any other internship or short-term employment. The experience gained from T&T will therefore be useful in my future career and in my final year project. The most important aspect of the experience from the internship is that it has offered me the opportunity to develop my career plans and in my understanding of the management course. To begin with, the internship gave me an opportunity to practice theories learnt in class in the real life. I also realized that most of the theories taught in the management schools are practical and applicable in a number of fields within a company setting.
Secondly, the internship opportunity enabled me to develop my interactions with people and gave me the chance to practice my managerial skills. Through the internship, I realized that management is not a simple task but with the right attitude and skills, all management tasks are possible. The opportunity also gave me a chance to interact with other professionals and in this interaction, I realized that no profession could succeed in isolation and therefore sharing is an important aspect.
Lessons learnt
The internship opportunity not only provided me with important skills and experience but it enabled me to acquire some important knowledge. This knowledge will be important in my management career both at school and after school. To begin with, I have learnt that a good manager should be people focused and therefore all management policies should be based on the needs of the people (Segel, 2008). In addition, I have learnt that all decisions made at the managerial level should be based on wide consultation between the involved parties. I have therefore learnt that a good manager should work closely with other professionals within the company in order to make important decisions.
I have learnt that good record keeping is very important to the company and therefore managers should strive to keep good records. I have also learnt the ethics of record keeping that involves accuracy and security in storage of documents. Finally, I have learnt that an efficient filling system is important in the management duties. Through the internship, I have also learnt new filling techniques that are important in the management field.
Areas of personal growth
As an intern in T&T Company, I was exposed to management at top level and therefore I had a chance to interact with other top managers of the company. The internship also exposed me to management duties that enabled me to learn personal values that are important to me as a manager. To begin with, I have acquired good presentation skills and people skills that are important in the management world. Through interaction with the company employees, I have realized that the employees within a company are very important and therefore there is need to have good interactions with them. Secondly, through these interactions I have gained the right people skills that involve management and supervising junior employees. In this interaction, I have also learnt that a good manager should be a presentable person and this has helped me to improve my presentation skills. The internship has enabled me to gain problem-solving skills that are not only important in the business world but also in my life outside the office (Segel, 2008). I also intend to apply these new learnt skills in my course work for solving practical work and questions.
Personal reflection on the internship
According to my own experience, the internship has enabled me to learn some important things that are important to me as a student and for my life after school. The experience at T&T has enabled me to acquire important knowledge that is essential in the development of my management career. Through the internship, I have learnt how to apply knowledge learnt in class in real world situation. The internship has therefore been an important link for the knowledge learnt in class and the practical work experience.
Through the internship, I have also realized the need to change a few elements if I get a full employment at T&T. To begin with, I intend to streamline the filing system of the company to make it efficient and flexible. This implies that I need to introduce a new filing system that is according to the modern filing standards. I also need to introduce a system that is efficient and a system that operates according to the required standards.
Secondly, during my internship period I noted that the company lacked specialization on duties due to insufficient employees. Following this experience if I am appointed the manager of the company, I shall work to ensure that the company has the right employees for the right tasks. I would therefore propose new recruitments that are based on competence and training of the existing employees.
The opportunity offered me a chance for growth through exposure to new challenges that I had not experienced before. Through these experience I was able to grow both in my career as a manager and on my personal life. The internship helped me to realize that success depends on competence and therefore applying skills in all task assigned to me as a profession is important. Through this experience, I have grown from a management student to independent managers who can handle management duties according to the correct strategies.
The internship is not only important for application of the knowledge learnt in class but also for my future career. The internship therefore has a career potential for me as a management student. To begin with, the internship provided me with important experience that I need to upgrade my resume and this will be important in my future employment and in the search for employment. Secondly, through the internship I realized that management is the right career for me and therefore I need to put all effort to develop my skills.
Through my experience at T&T, I realized that my career should begin from a developing company instead of a well-established company. I would therefore consider working for the company as a manager. The main reason why I would like to work for the company is that the company has been of great significance to my future career and therefore I would consider offering my service to the company given a chance. Secondly, I would like to participate in the development of the company to a market leader in the hauling industry. Finally, it is only through working with a developing partner that one can develop. Therefore, I would consider working for the company for my personal career development.
As a management intern, I realized that I have a responsibility for the welfare of the employees and this includes their spiritual needs. As a Christian, I took this as a duty and responsibility to spread the good news to my fellow workers. I also realized that most of the people working in the company had not embraced the Christian faith and I therefore used this chance to host my workplace ministry.
Finally, working at T&T Company gave me the best experience as a manager that I could not have gained from any other source and therefore I would recommend my fellow students to consider applying for such internship. The internship is also available for graduate students and I would recommend them to apply.
Christian perspective
There, are several important things I noted while working for the company that are important for my life and career as a Christian. To begin with, I realized that a manager is not just an ordinary employee and a supervisor but he /she has extra responsibilities. Through the internship, I realized that the employees in such company rely upon the manager as the sole guide in their life and therefore they require the manager to guide them on spiritual matters. As a manager, I realized that one has a good opportunity to start a work-place ministry that takes care of the employees needs.
Secondly, I have realized that a managerial position is not only an employment opportunity but it is a chance to demonstrate one's Christian faith. This therefore requires that one should have a high degree of accountability and integrity. The internship has also enabled me to realize that a manager needs to set a good example and demonstrate good Christian values to fellow employees.
