Agency program for Conscious aging
I could develop an agency program that would help the elderly through conscious aging as a unique opportunity to support emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth in readiness for the oldest-old stage of life. I would offer a wide range of services through the agency to accommodate as many individuals in different settings within the community. Such services would include seminars, counseling, part-time and full-time classes, and volunteering opportunities by qualified personnel to offer the services, training programs, and lectures.
The primary objective of the program would be to help the aging population prepare for transitions even without specific rituals for rites of passage such as marriage, employment, and parenthood or institutional structures that widely mark the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The reason for this approach is that only a few institutions exist to help the society in transiting through the second half of life.
In agreement with the modern theorists, I would customize the contents of the lectures to create awareness for the aging community in seeing personality in terms of adaptation over the life course or continuity. This program would create awareness that old age brings with it value addition, which is not present in the first half of life. Such value addition includes opportunities in sharing profoundly meaningful experiences to the community and harvesting deep wisdom that the old individual nurtured over time.
I believe the program would alleviate a new set of challenges that aging introduces such as the feeling of anxiety concerning physical decline, loss of independence, loneliness, possible isolation and struggles that emerge when one faces the realities of death. The program would, therefore, create a sense of celebration for the opportunities of later life. It would eliminate many behavioral or psychological problems that arise due to difficulties in preparing for transitions.
The program would operate on more optimistic theories than those that perceive old age as a period of loss that ends in passive adjustment or dependency and depression. The program will target seniors who desire to engage in dialogue concerning these challenges.
