Topic 2 – Substance Abuse, found in the series “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.” In episode one, a party ends unceremoniously. A character by the name Nyle knocks at Sarah’s door. Sarah opens the door thinking it is Nathan only to find Nyle. She tells him to get out saying that he is high but he forces his way in. Nathan later goes to Sarah only to find a body wrapped in a rug. Sarah has been murdered. When the detectives come to Sarah’s apartment, they find that she has been shot in the chest. There are many clothes designed by NyleBrite. The detectives also find many wigs and condoms in her apartment. The detectives suspect Nathan for the murder owing to the text messages between him and Sarah. Meanwhile, the detectives find a fake ID and conclude that Sarah was pretending to be a student at Hudson University. Sarah’s phone record has calls record from Nyle from his main office.
The detectives go to Nyle’s design studio. Nyle says he does not recognize Sarah and has given her no clothes. When he is shown her photo, he freaks. On questioning Teddy, Nyle’s friend and probably his assistant, he says he knows Sarah and is shocked to learn that she is dead. Goren discovers that Teddy is a special consultant to Nyle and says that he does everything for him to whom Eames adds like buying cocaine and hookers. Teddy responds by saying that they grew up together.
Sarah had sent Nyle flowers with a message to him before he appeared at her apartment. The detectives think that Sarah was blackmailing Nyle as they talk with Paul Keller. Paul denies knowing anything about Sarah. When they suggest he might be involved with the murder, he says he will have information sent to them. Goren brings up the subject of Nyle’s addiction. Paul says that he lost a brother to addiction and Goren adds that his own brother went the same way. He suggests that Paul should be focusing on getting Nyle to a rehab rather than the IPO they are getting into. To this, Paul says that he is a businessperson not a saint.
At Nyle’s, his wife tells the detectives that she had lived with him for 20 years and that he has multiple addictions. She says he would never hit or even kill a call girl. In short, it is evident that Nyle kills Sarah. He is a drug addict and this could probably explain the reason he kills her.
