The Steps of Alcoholism Anonymous
Anonymous Alcoholism program is one that has been successful in addiction treatment and rehabilitation programs. We get to learn that this program has steps followed to achieve expectations and success of its incorporation in treatment programs. As early as 1935, the program has been in existence for Ohio State to include worldwide groups to this date with over 10,000 groups involved with over two million members covered (Roleff, 2010). The program utilizes services and expertise of those who have been in addiction themselves and reformed to overcome the addiction. This is opted for since those who have overcome the addiction themselves know what the addicts go through. Those reformed are familiar with the orientation of the users unlike those of us who have never used drugs or alcohol, and they can communicate in a common language (Roleff, 2010). Of the methods and steps put in place, some of them may be familiar to us while others may not, and we can choose to accept and implement some measures while ignoring others.
Of the twelve alcoholism anonymous steps, the five that resonates with me that those members have to affirm starts with the acceptance of the members that the addiction weakened them. After the acceptance, it is upon the members to choose by themselves to turn away from the past, consider those they harmed in the process of addiction and make amends with such people in whatever manner possible (Roleff, 2010). We get to realize that the acceptance of whom a person is and the decision to turn from the past is instilled in them, and making such personal decisions would bear much fruit in the recovery process. Such people have to continue taking a personal inventory of the process and accept the wrongs they do, and in due course, take the message to other alcoholics and maintain the principles learned throughout their lives (Roleff, 2010).
