Jerusalem: Capital of Two States
Jerusalem is a city with multiple variations, and spatial exploration can expose it and its boundaries, with the effect that human interaction has brought about. There are much more to understand about the old city than just its boundaries that include the religious variations, with all the main groups based in the city. Even as the major monotheistic religions share the city, there is no peace and the pacts did not get to settle the issue of the boundary. The video covers transformation of the borders of the city and peace process to quell warring of the states with interest in the city.
Two parts of the video caught my attention. The first part is that of bringing out the meaning of Jerusalem. Being that the name of the place means ‘the city of peace’; the area has never experienced peace as interested parties keep on fighting over the control of its boundaries and beyond. Major religions of the world share the place as an area of residence, and even with that, Jerusalem still experiences conflict. Therefore, there is need to find peace that will last and end the continual fighting. The second part of the video that caught my attention was on those who reside in the area and the rich history that the region had in ancient times. It is indeed very tragic that the city has transformed into a battlefield within its region.
The most interesting part of the video is the fact that two states lay claim to the territory with each believing that a portion of the area belongs to them. The video indicates that Israel crossed the demarcation that set its boundary and intruded into regions of Jerusalem that sparked off Palestine to protest. Palestine was eying parts of Jerusalem as its jurisdiction of the future and the intrusion by Israel was like coercion. I found this engaging since it is the genesis of the war blanketing the area. It made the topic real by showing the fragile demarcations and warring nations that strive for a share of Jerusalem.
