Oceania Migration History
The Aboriginal groups initially inhabited Australia, but its colonialism changed the trend, with the British crown controlling the area and a prison being set up to lock prisoners from Europe. Other than the movement of the prisoners to the area, the discovery of gold in Australia also fueled the immigration of the whites even as the original inhabitants decimated to another region. Just as Australia, New Zealand also became under the control of the British, with the whites moving from England to occupy the area (Del Casino, Knox, Liverman, Marston, & Robbins, 2013). Until 1973, Australia had a policy-limiting nonwhite from immigrating in the country even as the British government gave subsidies for its citizens to relocate to the country.
The original inhabitants of the New Zealand were the Maori, but the British came in to settle and gain control of the region (Del Casino et al., 2013). In the area, a treaty allowed the Maori to get hold of their ancestral land and avoid the British from interfering with or conducting activity on their land without their approval. As compared to Australia, the original inhabitants of the area were not moved to another area but were allowed to settle with equal rights and respect for their possessions. The Aboriginal groups of Australia were moved to Tasmania and more whites encouraged occupying the region (Del Casino et al., 2013).
The similarity between the two nations is that the European populations are the dominant groups, and the original inhabitants have mainly been assimilated to the European groups (Del Casino et al., 2013). Even as some still hold their culture, it is evident that there is more practice of western cultures. Australia remains to monitor immigration into the country to uphold the white dominance whereas, in New Zealand, the original inhabitants are granted justice, receiving compensation for the historical wrongs. There are Australian communities in New Zealand, United Kingdom and North America whereas New Zealand Still holds its people.
